Harvey Weinstein to ruin revive Charles James

A Marchesa creation from the label's F/W

When I recently read the post-Met Gala news that Harvey Weinstein will be reviving this year's honoree Charles James' company, I laughed. Back then it seemed funny, but now I realize it was a rather pain-
ful laughter, like the one you let out when finding out shocking news that you don't know how to react to.

The main reason why I laughed - aside from the fact that another legendary designer's legacy will be ruined much like Halston's - was that Mr. Weinstein's wife, Georgina Chapman, will be the creative director of the brand. For those of you who do not know, Chap-man is currently the creative force - without the word creative - behind Hollywood's adored brand Marchesa which quite frankly specializes in red carpet dresses and not much else.

Truth be told - and when have we ever wanted to hear lies - Georgina is not really a designer. She and her business-pal Keren Craig "design" flashy red carpet dresses that are based on previously created patterns and therefore have no vision, sense of innovation, nor artistic guidance to produce something valuable. The pieces of clothing that the label sells are appreciated because of the atelier's hard work and precision in construction, cut and beading, meaning they have nothing to do with the two women appointed.

This being said, there is no doubt that the Marchesa brand is successful in its own commercial terms and that is makes a pretty penny. However, the Charles James brand deserves a real designer - dare I mention John Galliano who recently got a gig at a Russian beauty brand instead of working where he really belongs - and we simply cannot pretend that Ms. Chapman is a suitable candidate for the job that requires a person's undivided time and dedication and above all, real talent.
